Jake Adams, Managing Editor
Jake Adams has been an avid marine aquarist since the mid-90s and has worked in the retail side of the marine aquarium trade for more than ten years. He has a bachelor’s degree in Marine Science and has been the managing editor of ReefBuilders.com since 2008. Jake is interested in every facet of the marine aquarium hobby from the concepts to the technology, rare fish to exotic corals, and his interests are well documented through a very prolific career of speaking to reef clubs and marine aquarium events, and writing articles for aquarium publications across the globe. His primary interest is in corals which Jake pursues in the aquarium hobby as well as diving the coral reefs of the world.
Brian Blank, Senior Editor
Brian Blank has been blogging about the aquarium industry since 2007 and writing with Reef Builders since 2009. Brian has been involved in spurts of aquarium keeping since he was a youngster. Most recently he has kept freshwater aquariums throughout the 1990s and briefly ventured into saltwater before breaking down the tank while in college. He ventured into the reefing world in 2006 finally fulfilling his dream of a larger saltwater tank. As a DIY nut and gadget fanatic, he brings a passion covering new products and innovations while leaving the livestock to the other incredible writers at Reef Builders. He often pens aFridaySmorgasbord column that explores the wild, wacky and wonderful side of the aquatic kingdom. Brian studied PR and marketing at San Jose State University and works for a high-tech PR agency in San Francisco. Brian and his awesome wife Veronica and baby daughter live in Pacifica, California, where his aquarium is currently on hold as he works on updated his home.

I have been thinking of moving from freshwater to marine for some time now, but have always been hesitant because of the huge filtration requirements for marine – I have very limited space. I came across you article on the Seachem Tidal 55 and was wondering if this is the only filter you are using on the tank you mentioned. What I am trying to confirm, is if one can run a small marine aquarium with less than 10 fish (mostly easy care fish like clowns/ chromis or damsels) with the Seachem Tidal filter only

This is a follow-up to my previous email of today. I would also like permission to publish the photograph (lateral view) of the gorgeous live Tattoo jawfish shown on your webpage in Zootaxa. Incidentally I described this jawfish (Opistognathus decorus) as a new species in the Japanese Journal of Ichthyology in 1985. To whom do I need to contact for permission and who do I acknowledge as the photographer. In the locality is known that would also be appreciated.

This hybrid in any way number 1 they will be extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely aggressive/territorial/quarrelsome and predatory. 2 the male gets 26 inches the female maybe 18 or 19 inches.

I am looking to understand aquarium owners’ attitudes regarding environmental protection and the popularity of different aquatic measurement technologies (strips, kits, handheld meters, continuous meters). My general hypothesis is that there is a strong correlation between keeping an aquarium and environmental protection awareness and behavior. But some of the feedback I’ve received suggests relatively few aquarists take care to measure the pH in their tank regularly.

Room conditioning tends to always be overlooked, my local heating and air guys are at a loss. At one point I had 800 gallons going and humidity was basically uncontrollable. You and I would guess Jason fox must have figured something out. Please share and information you may have.

I am in need of some expert advice. I have been Reef keeping for over twenty years and have dealt with every coral parasite out there, till now. I have a heavily stocked 400gal tank, all SPS with colonies over 10 years old. This summer I had a few RTN situations occur on my birds nests followed by a very gradual STN on a few of my prized SPS corals. Same species, different parts of the aquarium. At night I could see extremely small black very fast moving slugs eating what I would think was the dead tissue around the necrosed area. They had been laying egg clusters under the dead coral tissue. It would appear that I had an Acro eating flatworm situation but they do not at all look like or move like any flat worms I have ever seen. Nor have I introduced any new coral or anything for that matter in years. They seemed to enjoy eating both smooth skinned acros and bushy alike but still leaving other hole very similar species alone. I have had to break apart some of my prized corals to separate the STN from the healthy and have continued dipping the colonies that are now suspended off the rock work. These ‘detritus’ eating flat worms are still found from time to time even on other healthy colonies that have no tissue damage. I have placed test colonies back on the rock work of the same species and some are fine, thriving and growing with no issue while again others start reseeding with the fast black worms nipping at the base. It is as if a detritus worm has developed a taste for coral. ICP test came back normal except for low to no Iodine at the time of the noticed start of the RTN event. I have no idea were to go from here. Hoping you may have thoughts on what I am dealing with.
